33 years too late; however, I'm glad to see that Canada finally has its own PURCHASED Leopard 2s.   :salute:

(As a reminder, we got our Leo 1s, aka "Leo C1" back in 1978, while in 1979, the Leo 2 was "released"...)

They had to pull the Leo I jigs  out of storage and restart the production line while in the midst of starting the Leo II line.I suspect we're still not Kraus- Maffi 's favorite customers.

I remember when the first Leo's arrived in Halifax to be loaded on trains for delivery out west, or trucked to Gagetown.

I was still in Junior High at the time.

Let's not confuse people and clarify this statement.   For people in Halifax, Gagetown is "out west".   ;D

In 1978, no Leo 1's made it further West than Gagetown, or the RCEME School in Borden.

Must have been a Reg Force wag. None of the Reserve wrench turners I worked with would have said something like that. In fact, it wouldn't be long before we would have rigged up something similar if the ARV showed up without it.

Seems to me there aren't any ARV's in the PRes. And no PRes R411 techs qualified unless they are double dippers.

Just two questions from an old tanker (literally). I notice on the Strathcona's Leo 2 information sheet (dated 21 Feb 11) that they will have three distinct variants (Leo 2A4 (9), 2A4M (11) and 2A6M (20)). I was wondering if it is likely the variants will be grouped by squadron or troop or whatever. And how are current tank squadrons organized? 4 x 4 + 3 in SHQ? Having served on Centurion and Leo C1 it is wonderful to see us finally getting leading-edge tanks.

The Sqn's are currently 3 x 4 with SHQ having 2-3. As for how the Tanks will be split by variant, we only have A4M right now.

I have yet to be able to take a look inside, we guys in HQ Sqn were told to keep our paws off of them! I think a peek is an order after spending two full days clearing all the old crap out of the white whale.

They still look nice and fresh, I love how the ECM antenna still have the bubblewrap on them.

Rumour has it we can't even take them to the field yet because it'll take another year or two to get an ARV large enough to tow them. I thought it pretty menacing that these bad boys don't even fit in the tank barn doors.  :nana:

New tank smell? gear oil, grease, diesel, paint,  as opposed to old tank smell mud,  sweat, diesel, grease, gear oil, paint, cordite.

My Regt will be the only one with 2 Tank Sqn's. The composite Tank Sqn in Gagetown will be the only other unit to receive them, and it is RCD badged with some exceptions.

So the Queen's Cavalry  ;) will have how many total Leo 2s then? 2 tank sqn doesn't really sound like a lot, but I do know the LdSH(RC) also have a Recce sqn and RHQ/HQ sqn (which, should have tanks as well should it not?).

Edit: Never mind, I missed the post at the top of the page.

I know our Leo 1's are really getting long in the tooth, but it is sad we couldn't cascade our vehs down like the Germans did when they got their Leo 2's into mass production and moved their Leo 1's into the Recce role, cascading them down to the Aufklärung Battalions.

They are impressive. I had a chance to crawl all over them the last time I went to Edmonton.
Personally, I think they look better than the A6.

So do you have expressed permission to use these photos? The photos you have posted are stamped by someone I know who is currently writing a book, therefore there may be some copyright issues here.

That being said, they will be taken down unless he lets us know it's GTG.

Nerf herder, just for my personal intrest. How could someone taking pictures of DND equipment on a DND base possibly claim copyright  on anything they shoot?

Thanks.

I would think.....SWAG here.....with permission for a specific purpose.....back when dinosaurs roamed, we were not allowed to take any pics of our Tech Shops, even peripherally that might include background radar dishes, etc.....

not sure on today's rules, but.................

I was thinking that, as they looked like strips of Velcro. How do they work (presuming that they are not actually Velcro)?

That's copyright law.  If I take a picture I own the copyright to that image.  (Employees acting on behalf of their employer usually have assigned the copyright of their work to their employer, but that's a different situation).

I skimmed through your attachment but I still wonder on the validity of taking photos of kit on a DND base and claiming copyright. Unless the photographer did have the permission of the base to take photos and copyright them.  If the work was not for profit I could understand but if there is profit to be made I don't know.

In the attachment it states"(Note: in certain cases, you do need permission to include other people and/or their property in your work, see section on model releases).  This is the part that has me wondering, thanks for the link.

In a related story, serious reasons not to take pictures of stuff.

Copyright and commerical exploitation of that copyrighted image are two different things.  Copyright is automatic.

CF members performing their duties generally can't assert rights to their own image or privacy rights, as they are considered "public officers" and thus, barring other statutory reasons such as the security of information act, they are fair game when on duty in uniform.

Seeing as the individual is known by the Armour community to be in the process of writing a book and the photos in question are stamped with his name - why run the risk of drawing any legal attention to this site from outside?

Ack;  as someone who has shot hundreds of photos that are floating around the internet and god knows where else (although a lot of them belong  to DND) it was purely my own interest in how you perceived copyright and why you though they should be taken down.

Personally I don’t care if my photos are used and I am quite happy to see them pop up every once and a while on an internet site or a magazine.  That is not to say that one of these days some one could easily take a photo of mine and display it out of context, but that is the risk you run when you make photos easily accessible.

Sorry for the derail of the thread.
