Trade?
« on: October 12, 2004, 17:54:35 »
Hello, are there trades for those with experince in Computer Security?
I'm a computer geek with a fairly decent (i'd say) knowledge of *nix and bsd based systems.
Any specific trade I should consider where I can engage in further developing these skills?
so, shellcode/exploits/0day/etc is what I usually deal with daily. Any thoughts from anyone who
does this within the military at present?
I'm just wondering if I should reconsider and instead move to North Korea and enroll in they're "Hacker" program.

the answer is no.  there are obviously personnel within the CF who are the equivalent of civvie network admins, but you won't find a position that has anything to do with the type of "computer security" you're talking about.

And, a word of advice here, it's not usualy wise to advertise the fact that you deal in "0day".  Nor does it have anything to do with computer security, so you probably shouldn't include it on a resumé.  You're just admitting to being a thief, which is a good way to never get hired.

I was just citing that as an example.
0day is for chumps.
But the fact that I do engage in publishing exploits based on exisiting or vulnerable applications I find
on my own, does not make me a script kiddie or a 'cracker'.
And no, I don't include it on my resume. The simple fact is I usually find myself daily working with
code/et cetera that could potetially be used by non-whitehat computer security folk to defraud and/or
engage in criminal activities.
I'm not a theif.
But that does suck indeed.
Anything remotely concerning computers then? I'd hate to choose a trade I have no qualifications for.
Not that learning x86 asm is exactly a qualification.

Sorry, that would be me trolling.
I checked the trade's FAQ, and I've cleared it up that
you don't do the IT stuff. Which is odd because I'd have thought
the military needed IT geeks. At least the American Military does, or at least
actively attempts to recruit such individuals. Is the Canadian Armed Forces
doing the same? The United States has the DHS, here in Canada we have the
http://www.psepc.gc.ca/  wouldn't we be facing the same "digital" threat as
the united states?
Or not, and I'm completely misrepresenting the facts?
http://www.psepc.gc.ca/national_security/publications_e.asp
mmm...clear message there.
What of Hackers? What of the CSIS website being defaced?
bah, forget it. I guess I'll just hopefully be recruited as a grunt.
If worse comes to worse we could always pretend we had a
viable defence against something like North Korea's Supposed
"Hacker" threat.

You may be interested in this link. Not many people are aware of this particular organization within the CF. "Old crows" are an interesting bunch.

Of course the CF has an organisation devoted to CND - and not to CNA.  Any large org these days has and needs one.

So which is the reccomended course of action?
Not entirely sure what the proper course would be.
I apply and is there anything specific I should ask for?

Okay, the FAQ was great.
Now, I'm still not sure what I want to do.
I know I'll do great on the physical as the "19" pushups/situps is a fairly low number.
I will on the other hand need to work on the 2.5 km run.
I also think I won't do too bad on the test.
Medical/blah
The only thing i'm unsure of is what trade?
I also am not sure, but I don't care whether I'm and officer or a
NCM as long as I can do something related to computers.
Is there anything specific I should mention? Like Language's I am profecient in (programming languages),
computational concepts, etc.
As i've already stated, I don't care what I do as long as it's related to computers and in the military.

I would suggest that you look into Communicator Research. For obvious reasons I can't get into details about it but I am sure you could find some satisfying work in our trade. Try to do some research and learn what you can. The SIGINT world is vast and mysterious but many find it rewarding.

I would say Comms Research as well, you sound like you'd fit right in.

Nobody "fits right in" to the 291er world haha.  The best thing about the Comm Rsch trade is that there is so many things to branch out into, and lots of opportunity to learn.
